St George Illawarra made a stunning late swoop to sign out-of-favour New Zealand Warriors hooker Nathan Fien before last night's transfer deadline.
The Dragons secured Fien after reaching a financial agreement with the Warriors over the remainder of his contract.
The signing means Fien will be available to play for the Dragons in next Sunday's blockbuster against premiers Manly at WIN Stadium and will train with the club for the first time on Monday.
Full coverage of The St George Illawarra DragonsSt George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett said the Kiwi international would add valuable experience to the squad as they close in on the minor premiership and an elusive NRL title.
"The circumstance arose for Nathan to join our club early following an amicable discussion with the Warriors," Bennett said.
"And his experience will add depth to our squad for the remainder of this year.
"Nathan is a versatile player and I am sure he will fit in well with our club, players and the style of football we like to play."
The 29-year-old hooker had already signed a three-year deal with the Dragons from next season, but looked set to finish this season in the NSW Cup as the June 30 deadline drew near.
However, the agreement provides Bennett with another option at hooker, allowing Dean Young to return to his more preferred role in the back row.
Dragons halfback Mathew Head and hooker Luke Priddis have both had limited game time and impact in trying to cement their positions in the team.
Speculation had been rife about a straight swap between Fien and Dragons centre Chase Stanley, but the switch was ruled out when Stanley declared he wanted to stay with St George Illawarra.
