Dragons matches at WIN Stadium announced

12 Nov, 2009 03:16 PM
The St George Illawarra Dragons today announced their home game allocation for the 2010 Telstra Premiership season.

The Dragons will play five of the opening six home games of the season in Wollongong to allow for the $28.9 million re-development of the Western Grandstand at WIN Stadium, which will begin in May.

"The recent funding announcement presented us with a good problem to have, however it has caused a disruption and delay in certain Club programs, in particular Red V Membership for next season,'' Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust said.

"The concerted view of all stakeholders who have been actively consulted in recent times in regards to the construction process and timings is to ensure that we start construction on the western grandstand replacement as soon as possible in 2010 while at the same time ensuring we maximise the number of home games in our key southern community of Wollongong."

WIN Stadium Wollongong will host the Mercury Challenge pre-season feature match (February 20) and five home games, one less than the usual regular season allocation due to the beginning of the construction process; those being the Bulldogs (Round 2), Cowboys (Round 3), Broncos (Round 5), Sharks (Round 8) and Raiders (Round 11).

WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah will host six home games beginning with a return clash against the Eels (round 12), West Tigers (Round 16), Panthers (Round 17), Titans (Round 20), Sea Eagles (Round 23) and Rabbitohs (Round 26).

The traditional ANZAC Day clash against the Sydney Roosters in Round 7 will be played at the Sydney Football Stadium a Dragons home game in 2010.

So that the split between Kogarah and the Gong is even, the ANZAC match should ALWAYS be a Roosters home game; the SFS is their home ground anyway. The Dragons essentially end up losing a home game every 2 years. I don't understand why the NRL does this; it makes the split uneven and it just doesn't make any sense.
