Rock star Dell delivered a tribute to the late music icon Michael Jackson last night, but it was St George Illawarra five-eighth Jamie Soward who put his name up in lights as a potential State of Origin bolter.
Soward played a starring role as the Dragons fought off the Roosters at WIN Jubilee Oval, putting his hand up for selection when the NSW team is picked on Monday.
The playmaker set up tries for Wendell Sailor and Matt Prior (twice), proving a major headache for the Roosters throughout, just as he did in a 29-0 demolition in their previous encounter on Anzac Day.
Full coverage of The St George Illawarra DragonsSailor did the moonwalk, a move made famous by Jackson, after scoring his try, but it was Soward who had most cause to celebrate after sealing the win with a runaway try two minutes before full-time.
The Roosters led 12-6 at half-time, with former Dragon Craig Fitzgibbon scoring all of their points before Soward led the second-half surge.
With Dragons prop Justin Poore and second-rower Ben Creagh expected to retain their positions in the NSW team for the third Origin game in Brisbane, Soward and winger Brett Morris are now also in contention.
While they might be at the opposite ends of the NRL ladder, it was the Roosters who started like competition leaders, dominating possession and territory for the opening 15 minutes.
The pressure was turned into points when Fitzgibbon, almost certainly playing his last game against his former club before joining UK Super League team Hull at the end of the season, scored between the posts.
The chances the Dragons had early were snuffed out, with Sailor bundled into touch in the ninth minute after collecting a loose Soward pass.
Sailor was again pushed over the sideline later in the half, when opposite number Shaun Kenny-Dowall stopped a barnstorming run from a broken play situation.
St George Illawarra were sparked to life in the 19th minute when halfback Ben Hornby put centre Matt Cooper into a yawning gap.
Cooper made a looping run inside in search of the tryline, before offloading for Jason Nightingale, who turned it back for lock Neville Costigan to crash over.
Having snatched back the ascendancy, the Dragons couldn't find a way to take the lead, with NSW second-rower Ben Creagh unable to get an offload away six minutes before half time to take advantage of an overlap on his outside.
Fitzgibbon then secured a 12-6 half-time lead for the Roosters when former Bulldogs forward Nick Kouparitsas offloaded for the Dapto junior to score just before the break.
