After dominating defensively last season, St George Illawarra players say they are primed to showcase a more attacking style.
The Dragons conceded just 56 tries last year, the fewest in the league, but struggled to create points, especially during their late-season slump.
Speaking after their 26-26 draw with Souths in Saturday's Charity Shield, Dragons players were adamant they would play with more flair this year.
Full coverage of the Dragons "I think we threw the ball around a bit more than we have in the past ... we were just one-out all the time last year, but tonight we were a little bit more creative," second-rower Ben Creagh said.
"This time last year our attack was one-out and very conservative, we've worked on that - we're throwing the ball around, putting our plays on and we're pretty confident."
Positional changes by master coach Wayne Bennett seem to have sparked his side's attack.
Jeremy Smith has moved to the right edge and Matt Prior to prop, while Jason Nightingale has replaced Wendell Sailor on the right wing.
"Jeremy adds an extra dimension in attack, he gives us a bit of ball playing and takes it to the line," Nightingale said.
"Darius (Boyd) sweeping around is helping as well, he's helping us mix it up.
"There is a bit more variety to our attack, we've definitely been working on that and making sure we're improving and getting a bit more expansive and trying some new things."
Boyd was superb in tricky conditions, with many players struggling to keep their footing on the slippery surface, most notably five-eighth Jamie Soward.
Brett Morris showed he will be a leading candidate for leading try-scorer again in 2010 with his three four-pointers.
His final effort in the 80th minute - a remarkable barge over the line from 5m out - tied the game before Soward's sideline conversion slid wide.
Rookie utility Kyle Stanley suffered a high ankle sprain during the trial after showing promise at left-centre. A Dragons spokesman said the injury was not serious but Stanley did leave the stadium on crutches.
Darius Boyd was replaced late in the fixture with cramps and substitute Bronx Goodwin suffered a cork, but both are likely to be available for round one.
Matt Cooper missed the match with a hamstring strain but will be ready for the season opener.
He told Fox Sports: "I'll be fine, I'd play next week if we had a game. I'll be back at training on Monday."
