Mark Gasnier’s mission is simple.
The 28-year-old returns to the NRL determined to win a premiership with his beloved Dragons.
But the former St George Illawarra captain wants to make it clear his comeback isn’t just based around a personal crusade.
Gasnier admits to being conscious about being thrust into a team already flying high at the top of the ladder and how it impacts on the on-field dynamic.
Full coverage of the Dragons Two years ago Gasnier fronted the media at St George Leagues Club to announce he was walking away from the game to play rugby union in France.
The mood was tense and Gasnier was defensive about his plight after third-party contractual deals had fallen through, leaving him significantly out of pocket.
Yesterday, across the road at a WIN Jubilee Oval corporate suite, Gasnier’s mood was jovial as he sat next to St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust, coach Wayne Bennett and captain Ben Hornby.
Gasnier has signed until the end of the 2014 season.
‘‘I’m ecstatic,’’ Gasnier said of the deal.
‘‘But it’s not about me and what I want to achieve, it’s about the club - and me fitting into the club.
‘‘Wayne made that clear from the start and I really like that because it’s exciting.
‘‘It feels like I’m starting from scratch.’’
