Mark Gasnier remained tight-lipped about his future yesterday as coach Nathan Brown denied his star centre's protracted contract negotiations were becoming a distraction for the in-form Dragons.
Gasnier has been linked to the lucrative French rugby union competition, with reports circulating that he may be close to signing with the Ewen McKenzie-coached Stade Francais.
The eight-Test veteran fronted media yesterday at Kogarah but refused to provide any news on his future.
"I've acknowledged that I was negotiating there two or three months ago and as it stands nothing's changed and until something does - I'll be happy to talk about it then - so until then it's purely St George Illawarra," Gasnier said.
Brown admitted the timing of Gasnier's negotiations could be better but said it wasn't bothering his team.
"These things are never ideal but I think we're at the stage were Gaz is doing what he's doing and no-one's really ... concerned about it," Brown said.
"It's not like players come to training everyday and say 'Gaz, what are you doing?"
"Gaz is sorting it out, and when he sorts it out I'm sure he'll tell everybody."
Gasnier's centre partner Matt Cooper was still hopeful his team-mate would stay with the Dragons, saying the signing of Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett for next season could have an influence on the decision.
"I'm pretty sure that Bennett coming here (will) be a factor in Gaz's decision," Cooper said.
"Obviously he is a great player and he brings a lot of leadership skills to the club as well.
"He's been a great captain this year and I hope he stays."
"When Gaz is ready to make that decision he'll make it. We as players, we don't really care, as long as he's here this year. In saying that, I hope he is here next year for sure."
