Haters are my motivators, says Anthony Mundine

Haters are my motivators, says Anthony Mundine

29 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
"Skills pay the bills," chortled Anthony "The Man" Mundine.

The Man believes his skills and speed will be far too superior for Ryan Waters to handle when they meet in a WBA world junior middleweight title eliminator at WIN Entertainment Centre on September 15.

Mundine and Waters faced off at a media conference at the WEC yesterday.

Mundine predicted the fight wouldn't go the distance. Waters was adamant he has the fistic weapons to beat The Man.

"I know I've got the better skills because at this level it's all about the skills," Mundine said.

"There's only two things that are going to win this fight and that's skills or luck. And he has to count on getting lucky because I know he can't beat me with skills."

Mundine also fired a shot at his critics, saying: "My haters are my motivators."

For both boxers this fight is a chance to earn a shot at the WBA world junior middleweight belt. For The Man it's also an opportunity to scale the heights in three weight divisions - super middleweight, middleweight and junior middleweight.

Waters, who jumped in the ring in Brisbane and challenged Mundine after The Man scored a unanimous points decision over Argentinian Carlos Jerez on June 30, welcomed the chance to fight the high-profile boxer but he would not be overawed.

"It's a great opportunity to fight Anthony. I'm looking forward to the bout. But for me it's just another fight. The opponent to me doesn't really phase me at all," Waters said.

"It's another hurdle on my way to winning the world title, in my eyes."

The Waters camp acknowledges that Mundine is an incredible athlete but say they have the game plan to derail him mainly because The Man struggles to make the weight. They figure this will sap Mundine's strength in the latter stages, leaving him vulnerable to a knockout.

As expected Mundine scoffed at those suggestions, saying he has a training program in place to be comfortable fighting at junior middleweight.

"I know that Ryan's main weapon is his strength," Mundine said.

"For me to counter that, I'll be as strong as him or stronger.

"I know how to win. I'm a winner."

Main Event pay-for-view will provide live coverage starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets to the fight night go on sale on Monday.

Still a pretender, yet to win a legitimate world title. Such a wasted talent, talks about only fighting the best, yet constantly seems to avoid exciting fights. Let's hope Waters, who is a solid RSL fighter manages to land one on this joker.

Nowhere near the pretender Green is. I have nothing but respect for Anthony Mundine. He has shown enormous courage both in and out of the ring.

A pretender whose beaten some of the best in the world including Ecwols, Soliman and Green. Avoids exciting fights? I don't know what you've been watching, but his last 9 or so bouts have gone the distance and the Geale fight last year is widely recognised as one the best in Australian hisotry... well, there you have it... all your statements upacked and debunked. Enough said.

Chris- oh where to begin. If you consider Echols, Soliman and Green some of the best in the world you have serious problems. Geale fight was ok, it was close, but hardly one of the best in Australian history. He told Green he should come out of retirement to be a man and avenge his loss, yet Choc had to chance to avenge the Kessler loss (he was mandatory challenger) and he ran away to another weight division.

Mundine has only fought 2 world class fighters, and he lost to both of them! He calls himself the best, and says he only wants to fight the best, but who has he beat in the last few years? (Green and Soliman are ok but HARDLY world class and neither was at their preferred weight). His only titles that matter were INTERIM titles, even the WBA whose belt he held would NOT have acknowledged him as the best in that weight division. If you want to follow an Aussie fighter with real heart look no further than Vic Darchinyan or Michael Katsidis, those boys back up what they say and don't dodge fights. Don't believe the rubbish that he feeds you! He has talent, but is yet to demonstrate it against the best!

Way to go Choc. Tackle Ryan who is rated about 50th plus in the world…. If you had a pair you would either take on Paul “the punisher” Williams or Miguel “Junito” Cotto. Only then I will call you “the man”

Will, the talk is he is getting in line to face Cotto, if he does this and beats him I will respect him too, but not until he beats a real champion.

mundain won't even fight Sakio Bika, who would punch his lights out in 3 rounds. Mundain is a pretender at best, and he actually knows this, and runs from any fight that is not hand picked by him and his so-called team.

Freddy - you question the credentials of Green, Echols and Soliman. Are you a true boxing fan? Echols was a legitimate contender when he fought Mundine, having given Bernard Hopkins two of his hardest ever fights (as claimed by Hopkins himself). He legitimately had the power to end a fight with one punch. Soliman was coming of a huge winning streak when he fought Mundine and had pushed Winky Wright to a decision (Wright was considered one of the top pound 4 pound fighters at the time). Danny Green, whilst very mechanical, can take your head off with one punch too and has destroyed a couple of big names (no i'm not talking Jones Jr), such as Beyer in fight 1 and Eric Lucas and Drews. If you are going to talk at least back it up my friend. Your argument is flawed. As for Vic Darchinyan or Michael Katsidis - yes they are good fighters, or in the case of Darchinyan, a great fighter, but, lets see who is laughing in ten years time when these boys are brain dead because of the style of fight they use. Mundine is a smart man and fights tachtical, not tit for tat whilst putting his health at unnecessary risk.
