Jason Nightingale is set to be St George Illawarra’s representative in the NRL All Stars team - unless a significant swing in voting occurs today.
With only hours remaining before voting closes, Nightingale was last night about 600 votes clear of his nearest team-mate Matt Cooper.
Ben Creagh and Michael Weyman were the other two Dragons players to make the second round of voting.
Full coverage of the DragonsOne player from each NRL club will join automatic entrants Benji Marshall and Cameron Smith to play against an Indigenous All Stars side at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast on February 4.
NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett will then pick an additional two players to form a 20-man squad for the third annual match.
Since stage two of voting began on December 27, more than 15,000 fans have taken the opportunity to play selector.
Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen last night held a slim lead over Melbourne’s Cooper Cronk to be the highest voted player to make the side.
Whether he finishes on top of the voting or not was irrelevant for Cronk.
‘‘The All Stars match is one that the players all want to be a part of and having never played in it, I am really honoured to be polling well so far in the voting,’’ he said.
‘‘This game brings together unlikely team-mates; you have Australian internationals playing alongside New Zealand internationals, so it’s really unique in that respect.
“Having watched it over the past few years I know each side plays with such passion and intensity, so it would be amazing to be a part of the match for the first time this year.”
No Dragons player was voted into the Indigenous All Stars side in December.
Voting can be done at www.nrl.com/allstars and closes at 11.59pm tonight.
The NRL All Stars team will be announced tomorrow.
