Jason Nightingale the pick for All-Star spot

18 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
Jason Nightingale is set to be St George Illawarra’s representative in the NRL All Stars team - unless a significant swing in voting occurs today.

With only hours remaining before voting closes, Nightingale was last night about 600 votes clear of his nearest team-mate Matt Cooper.

Ben Creagh and Michael Weyman were the other two Dragons players to make the second round of voting.

One player from each NRL club will join automatic entrants Benji Marshall and Cameron Smith to play against an Indigenous All Stars side at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast on February 4.

NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett will then pick an additional two players to form a 20-man squad for the third annual match.

Since stage two of voting began on December 27, more than 15,000 fans have taken the opportunity to play selector.

Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen last night held a slim lead over Melbourne’s Cooper Cronk to be the highest voted player to make the side.

Whether he finishes on top of the voting or not was irrelevant for Cronk.

‘‘The All Stars match is one that the players all want to be a part of and having never played in it, I am really honoured to be polling well so far in the voting,’’ he said.

‘‘This game brings together unlikely team-mates; you have Australian internationals playing alongside New Zealand internationals, so it’s really unique in that respect.

“Having watched it over the past few years I know each side plays with such passion and intensity, so it would be amazing to be a part of the match for the first time this year.”

No Dragons player was voted into the Indigenous All Stars side in December.

Voting can be done at www.nrl.com/allstars and closes at 11.59pm tonight.

The NRL All Stars team will be announced tomorrow.

Very good player, intelligent, articulate and no tattoos not enough of them in the game.

Jason Nightingale is a great player and I wish him all the best.

Apart from a bit pre-season PR for the game I can't quite see what this matchup proves. There's a risk of injury because none of the players are match fit and it interrupts training.

It's a bit of a pride thing for the indigenous players but I don't see they have anything to prove. You could even argue that it is devisive.

A sort of them and us thing with aboriginal players. Maybe I'm missing something.

Toby it was Preston Campbells idea in the first place to get it going, more of a showcase game to prove to all the little kids out there to dream big and work hard regardless of their background, race or colour. I thought it has been reasonable quality considering it is a pre season game... Be devo if one of ours got injured though u are right there.
