NSW Cup team cuts close to mining heritage

08 Feb, 2012 09:32 AM
After months of deliberation, the region’s newly launched NSW Cup team will be officially known as the Illawarra Cutters, officials confirmed this morning.

Featuring the striking scarlet and white colour scheme of the Illawarra Steelers team, the Cutters name originated from the region’s close links with the coal industry, chairman Sean O’Connor said.

‘‘The name Cutters refers to coal-cutters or coal-hewers, men who perform well under extreme conditions, a perfect analogy with the modern rugby league player,’’ O’Connor explained.

In a further boost for the new outfit, Illawarra Credit Union has committed to a three-year sleeve sponsorship deal, while LX Electrical will adorn the shorts.

The Illawarra Cutters play their first game on March 3 against Cronulla at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium.

I think it is a great name and ideal as coal mining and shipping is one of the major employment in our local area.

There was a movie released in 1979 followed by a TV show in 1980 called “Breaking Away”.

It was set in a university town and the locals were called the cutters because the biggest employment in the area was the rock cutting.

The story of the movie was about a small-town local teen obsessed with the Italian cycling team vies for the affections of a college girl.

Hell yeah, looks good, I think there is still a hint of Steeler in the design with the miners helmet. I also think that the name is well chosen and is a good representation of the region. I wonder if there will be merchandise available for purchase? I'll be there for the first game. Hope to see you all there.

Looks ok, not too bad, but not as good as bringing the Steelers back into NSW cup. I would be more likely to go to games if I was watching the steelers, listening to the old theme song as they run out followed by "Another One Bites the Dust" after a victory. I guess you really can't live in the past though....

What a terrific choice for the name of our NSW Cup team.

I had suggested Miners in "Mercury" comments, but Cutters has a sharper edge, so to speak!

Looking forward heaps to watching their first games at Win next month.

All the best of luck to Coach McGregor and his men.

I like the logo ,but what is the NSW Cup?

Looks great, and it's a great name. A shame though that it's a name already used by a QLD Cup team. Where's the originality? If there's ever a national second tier league featuring QLD Cup and NSW Cup teams (and you can bet there will be) it's going to be back to the drawing board, or the club will look amateurish.

Tony,

The NSW Cup is a statewide "reserve" grade competition which includes some of Rugby League's most historic teams like Newton Jets and North Sydney Bears.

Most of those NRL Clubs who are not in mergers just stick with the name of their top squad for the NSW Cup, such as the Cronulla Sharks and Newcastle Knights.

Bring back the Steelers

BRING BACK STEELERS.

What an opportunity missed to engage with the community. I don't mind the Cutters name, but it doesn't really mean anything other than having a close link with the major sponsor. By bringing back the Steelers you would have attracted old and new generations and built on the short but proud heritage established by the Steelers. Now you have to start from scratch in engaging with the community and having an identity and recognition. I will go to the odd game, but it would have meant SO MUCH more if it were the Steelers.

Any research or did they simply ask the sponsor
