Peni Tagive's big chance to show his stuff

20 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
A golden opportunity presents itself for St George Illawarra Dragons recruit Peni Tagive tonight.

While defensive rock Beau Scott waits out the final week of his suspension from last season, Tagive will start at right centre in the Mercury Challenge clash against the Bulldogs at WIN Stadium.

He forms a potentially explosive right-side combination with winger Jason Nightingale.

Tagive's last NRL game came in round 12 last year, three days before Michael Weyman and Ben Creagh made their State of Origin debuts for NSW. Since then, the 21-year-old has struggled to overcome a shoulder injury before moving to Wollongong to start the preseason with his new club.

Tagive played eight NRL games for the Tigers after debuting against the Dragons in round one in 2008.

Dragons coach Wayne Bennett has already made it clear he will send out what he views as a full strength line-up for next Saturday's Charity Shield game against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

"There is an opportunity for him," Bennett said.

"I don't really know (where) yet, (Tagive) can play centre, he can play wing. I don't even know if he'll finish up in the 17 yet.

"There are a lot of positions that are settled in the team now and Jason Nightingale is not a stranger to first grade to take Wendell's (Sailor) spot.

"And there is a bit of an opportunity for somebody to grab Justin Poore's spot, but there's three or four of them trialling pretty well there."

Jarrod Saffy, Dan Hunt, Trent Merrin and Michael Greenfield are the leading candidates to start in the front row in place of NSW Origin representative Poore.

After enjoying his first full preseason since switching from the Warriors last year, New Zealand international Nathan Fien will also be pushing for a starting position.

"I just want to try and cement a spot in the starting line-up," he said. "It's good to have a preseason with the boys, even though I was a little bit behind to start after having a break at the end of the Four Nations tour."
