The Fijian rugby league team had some fun in the sun at North Wollongong Beach yesterday before they got down to the serious business of preparing for their World Cup match against France at WIN Stadium on Saturday.
The Fijians proved a hit with locals as they played beach cricket, had a swim and competed in a fun relay with nippers from North Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club.
The team will be based in Wollongong while preparing for their World Cup opener.
They will be officially welcomed to the city at a civic reception in Crown Street Mall at lunchtime today and will visit Gerringong on Wednesday.
The "Bati" feature two former Dragons - centre Wes Naiqama is captain of the side and South Coast junior Ashton Sims will play in the front row.
Their experience, along with that of Eels' star Jarryd Hayne, will be vital for a team packed with athletic ability but low on big-match exposure.
The country's football sides are renowned for their flamboyant style and although they are rated 500-1 outsiders to win the tournament, they are sure to be crowd favourites.
Their relaxed and easygoing nature saw them fit right in at the packed beach yesterday.
The Fijians' friendly attitude means children naturally gravitate to them and they were swamped by autograph seekers.
Team captain Naiqama said his team was loving the city's beach culture.
"We were in Woy Woy before and we didn't get to see much but today we had a bit of fun, got out on the surfboards and enjoyed the day.
"The boys are heaps friendly - they are friendly and open to a conversation, as you saw with them jumping in and racing with the kids."
