Port Kembla may hold the record for the most Illawarra first grade rugby league premierships but the club's future remains in jeopardy.
The Mighty Blacks are in a fight for survival.
Port Kembla withdrew from first and second grade before the start of the 2008 season, fielding teams in the VB Cup and under 18 competitions.
A reduction in profits at Port Kembla Leagues Club meant there could not be a commitment made by the leagues club to provide the rugby league club with sponsorship in the immediate future.
Only nine people attended the Port Kembla District Rugby League Football Club annual meeting two weeks ago.
Former St George and Illawarra Steelers forward Chris Walsh has stood down as president because of business commitments but intends to remain involved in the rugby league club.
An extraordinary meeting of the Port Kembla DRLFC has been called for 6.30pm tomorrow at Port Kembla Leagues Club, to elect an executive and committee to run the rugby league club in the 2009 season and beyond.
"If there are some people out there interested in the Port Kembla football club, we ask them to get along to this meeting," Walsh said.
"We realise we are not alone in this current economic climate.
"There are footy clubs that have been around a long time who are struggling. We're one of them.
"And football is not the only sport that is doing it tough. The (Wollongong) Hawks (NBL club) had a national campaign to keep them afloat and that was not easy.
"The leagues club is not able to sponsor the footy club. We still want to have a presence in the VB Cup and under 18s, but we have to get the local community and interested people involved so that we can survive in those competitions and eventually return to first and second grade competitions."
