 Priddis deserves to start: Lewis

Priddis deserves to start: Lewis

01 Sep, 2010 04:00 AM
Penrith lock Luke Lewis has thrown his support behind embattled Dragons hooker Luke Priddis, describing his end-of-season axing as "disappointing".

Lewis has called on St George Illawarra to give his former premiership-winning team-mate the send-off he deserves as he approaches the final weeks of his 14-year career.

The Panthers hard man believes Priddis' form this season warrants selection in the Dragons' semi-final campaign and would be a fitting way to farewell a great servant of the game.

"I think he's been playing great footy this year and has been leading the team really well," Lewis told the Mercury.

"He sticks to the game plan and does his own thing out of dummy-half.

"He's got good vision and I think he's been sensational this year."

Wayne Bennett has named the 33-year-old on an eight-man bench for the clash with South Sydney on Sunday night but, barring injury, he isn't expected to feature in the match at WIN Jubilee Oval.

The 33-year-old played 18 consecutive matches for the red and whites at hooker but, on the eve of the finals, Bennett has opted for the speedy Nathan Fien who has recovered from the leg injury he suffered in round one.

Priddis is unlikely to extend his 315-game career, but Lewis is adamant the former Raider and Bronco deserves to finish on a high.

"He's done everything in the game - won a grand final, he's a Clive Churchill medallist and has played representative football," Lewis said.

"The Dragons have such a good side down there and everyone is fighting for spots, but it would be special to see him off on a high.

"Hopefully, just not winning the competition."

Priddis played for Canberra and Brisbane before joining the Panthers in 2002 - three games into Lewis' NRL career.

Despite developing into a representative player himself, Lewis said he gained a lot from being around the champion hooker.

"He's been a professional for as long as I've known him," Lewis said. "I remember when he was here, he was the most professional bloke I've ever seen.

"I learned a lot from him."

Priddis helped get us to the minor premiership, he has been in great form this year and all of a sudden Fien is back and Priddis is dropped. Priddis deserves to be in 1st grade team and this is his last season he should be given the chance to go out on a high not shoved in reserve grade to play out his career. Give him a chance Bennett.

Priddis has been great all year for the dragooons, but is then thrown on the scrap heap when Fien is back. Show him some loyalty and respect, for him helping you dragooons top get to the finals again. Luke, you have been a great servant, of a not so great game.

Fien was told last year he wouldn't play much 1st grade, but an injury to Fien gave him an opportunity, he has done well, but now that Fien is back he must step aside for the good of the team. If another injury occurs to Fien or Young he may get a chance again, but the team MUST come first, i'm sure he knows that.

Fien has to be there no matter what, if Priddis was to get another start it would have to be at the expense of Young and with him being vice captain that won't happen

Prids has been fantastic for the Drags this year and deserves this chance - he won't let the team down. Fieny however has that little bit extra zip and dimension to his game and is a must first choice rake for the finals. Young to me is basically a useless player and whom I think Prids could do a better job. Young's selfishness with the ball will cost us the GF me thinks.

@country dragon, you forgot to mention that also because his (youngy) dad is the club manager. Good luck luke, you have been a great servant for the game. A great job for every team that you have played for.

Do you think Wayne Bennett is ruled by Craig Young? I don't think so!
