Rabbitohs' quandry over centres

17 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Former NSW representative Matt King is still optimistic about forming a dangerous centre partnership with Greg Inglis, even though he has been named on the wing for tomorrow night’s Charity Shield match.

New South Sydney coach Michael Maguire opted to thrust Shaune Corrigan and 21-year-old Blake Judd into battle against Dragons duo Matt Cooper and Chase Stanley at ANZ Stadium.

It has left King unsure of where his future lies with the team, having returned to Australia on a two-year deal after leaving Melbourne to join UK Super League club Warrington in 2008.

‘‘Circumstance has it this week that I’m on the wing,’’ he said. ‘‘My favourite position is in the centre, but I’ve been training in both positions all off-season.

‘‘Hopefully there’s an opportunity to play in the centre. [But] if it happens that I play on the wing, I’ll [still] do my best.’’

Inglis will miss the Charity Shield and is expected to be sidelined for the start of the NRL season after suffering an ankle injury playing for the Indigenous All Stars on the Gold Coast.

In terms of experience, a King-Inglis centre combination is the obvious option for Maguire.

King played nine State of Origin games for NSW, while Inglis has worn the Queensland maroon jersey 15 times.

The Charity Shield will reveal more of Maguire’s tactical plans for the Rabbitohs this season, while new Dragons coach Steve Price will use a near full-strength team.

Prop Roy Asotasi, one of five captains named this season, said Maguire had made it clear about his expectations.

‘‘He definitely tells you how it is, but at the same time you can get along with him,’’ Asotasi said.

‘‘If you get on his wrong side ... you don’t want to, he only has to say it once and that’s it. I’ve seen it a couple of times, but we don’t make the same mistake twice.

‘‘Every team works hard, but we’ve had to work a lot harder with the new coach
