Raper has famous boots to fill

02 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A famous surname can often have an adverse effect on a young aspiring athlete.

St George Illawarra utility back Jason Raper is an exception to the rule.

You’d struggle to come across a more level-headed relative of a superstar than 22-year-old Jason, the nephew of Dragons legend John ‘‘Chook’’ Raper.

Jason Raper will make his debut for the Dragons in Saturday night’s NRL trial game against the Bulldogs at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium.

In doing so, he’ll become John Raper’s first family member to play for the famous club since the former Australian skipper left in 1969.

But don’t think for a second Raper will be distracted by his famous uncle’s aura when he lines up in the club’s first hit-out of 2012.

‘‘People ask me a fair bit about whether the surname brings pressure with it but there’s certainly no pressure internally from the family or anything like that, that’s for sure,’’ Raper told the Mercury yesterday.

‘‘I remember I gave footy away for a couple of years just to hang out with my mates more back when I was 15 or 16 and there was no pressure then to get back into the sport.

‘‘Outsiders will obviously speak about it but I don’t take any notice of that.’’

Unlike his famous uncle, who was a rampaging lock, Raper is an agile and free-running outside back.

He spent his junior days with the Engadine Tigers in the halves, but has switched to the wing and fullback in recent years since joining Helensburgh in the Carlton League.

When asked if he’d like to give his nephew any sort of rap, John Raper, an eight-time Dragons premiership winner, couldn’t help but pause.

‘‘To be totally honest I haven’t seen much of him on the footy field because he’s played most of his footy in Sydney, but I’ve heard he goes pretty good,’’ he said.

‘‘I got the shock of my life when I heard he was playing in the trial, but I’m so pleased for him and proud of him.

‘‘You know what, he’s done all this himself you know. He hasn’t called on me in any way at all to get him picked.’’

Jason Raper is one of 27 players coaches Steve Price and Paul McGregor will keep an eye on in Saturday night’s trial.

McGregor, who offered Raper a NSW Cup contract when the team was formed late last year, is a fan of the utility.

McGregor first saw him while coaching against the then-teenager, who was playing for Helensburgh in the Carlton League.

‘‘He’s a kid that’s got good speed, he’s only a young bloke but he’s in good shape,’’ McGregor said.

‘‘He hasn’t played at the highest level yet and every person handles pressure in different ways.

‘‘I guess we’ll see how Jason handles it on Saturday night.’’

Tickets for Saturday night’s trial are available for $5 and $10. Kick-off for the main game is 6pm.

Once again its not how good you are its who you are, Fullback,Center,Winger, this bloke cant play its just another name of an old player all the local players are shunned unless you have the name of an old player or ex footballers son...Thats why St George / might as well say Illawarra are so bad 1 premiership dont make you a legend as they all have abandoned the ship its only a retirement team anyway only there for the money no commitment .........

    what was Wazza's ramble?

Didn't undestand a word in your mess.

Sure Raper probably aint a superstar and getting a run in a trial at 22 suggests that about all he'll be doing.

So what? Its a whole lot more than many 22yr olds are currently doing.

To Wazza and Swisstony. Ive played with Jase 4 years ago, and im playing with him again this year. The physical & mental maturity of this kid is rare to the modern day 22yr olds of todays' league players. I can say that as a player, he will go far with his determination and spirit, and for you 2 to talk trash about something you know nothing of, ticks me off. He's only just started exposing his talents that he's had for a long time, til the Helensburgh Tigers put themselves as a whole unit back on the competetive map. 2012 will be a massive year for us, and you will hear more about Jason Raper
