Sailor's on deck and ready for battle

17 May, 2008 05:00 AM
Shellharbour coach Dave Walsh shrugged off suggestions the Wendell Sailor circus could distract the Marlins in tonight's Jim Beam Cup stoush with Erina at Ron Costello Oval.

Sailor, who was signed by St George Illawarra this week, will play his first game in two years when he starts on the wing with Dragons feeder team Shellharbour.

The 33-year-old dual international will also line up with the Marlins for next Saturday's home game against the WA Reds.

Sailor met his Marlins teammates for the first time at last night's training session and later joined a team dinner at a Shellharbour restaurant.

Group Seven club Shellharbour Sharks have hosted grand finals at Ron Costello Oval but the Sailor factor is tipped to get curious spectators and media flocking to the ground.

The Marlins have won four straight and Walsh is confident Sailor's presence can only be positive.

"I think it'll only enhance our game and the way we've been going. To get a bloke of Wendell's experience is just fantastic and that will lift the team even more," he said.

"Having a bloke on the wing who's done everything at the highest level can only help. I'm sure his talk will be great, he'll be enthusiastic. He hasn't had a game for two years and I really think he'll lead the way.

"He's like an extra forward and he's always played that way, like when he and (former Broncos teammate Lote) Tuqiri played together. He's a big boy and he can run. That's his game and nothing will change. He's good at it and that's what we're expecting out of him tomorrow.

"All I've been hearing is that it's going to be a massive crowd and hopefully that will be the case.

"The boys are really pumped. They want to play with Wendell and they want to do well.

"If we can keep playing well, we might even win some more supporters out of that, and hopefully they'll keep following our season when Wendell's not there."

The Marlins are in fourth spot, while Erina are one place back in fifth.

Walsh said the side would not lose focus of what has made them successful during their winning streak.

"Erina are a tough team. They've got big strong forwards and play very aggressive. We beat them in our first game last year and they'll have that in the back of their minds," he said.

"They've got added incentive to play well with Wendell playing for us. We're only a point above them. We really need to lift. We can't rest on our laurels just because we've got a champion on the wing."

Kick-off is at 5.30pm.
