Scott told spot is safe despite Gaz signing

30 Jun, 2010 12:00 AM
NSW State of Origin centre Beau Scott sought an assurance from St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett that his place in the Dragons line-up was safe after the club signed Mark Gasnier.

Scott said his exact role in the team was yet to be determined, but he expected to shift to the second row and had been told by Bennett his future in the team was not under threat.

"We had a quick chat about it and he said 'you'll be in the team, put it that way'," Scott said.

"I haven't spoken too much about it, he'll move me around a bit, but I guess we'll find out what happens over the next couple of weeks.

"I think I'll be moving into the second row if Gaz moves out in the centres again."

With Scott away on Origin duty and unavailable for Monday night's top-of-the-table showdown with Penrith at WIN Jubilee Oval, Bennett resisted the temptation to name Gasnier in the Dragons starting line-up.

Instead, Gasnier was named on a six-man interchange yesterday, with Bennett selecting boom rookie Kyle Stanley and the versatile Matt Prior as the centres pairing.

At a press conference announcing Gasnier's return on Monday, Bennett was tight-lipped about where the former club captain would play, only confirming Jamie Soward and Darius Boyd would remain at five-eighth and fullback respectively.

Scott's ability in defence has been credited with helping Soward's rise as one of the most damaging playmakers in the NRL.

But Scott also has shown he has strike power in attack, making a superb break in last Friday's victory over Wests Tigers, setting up a try for Stanley.

A switch to the second row will see him battle team-mates Neville Costigan and Jeremy Smith for a starting position.

Entering camp yesterday for Origin III next Wednesday, Scott said he would not be disappointed when moved out of the position which earned him a sky blue jersey.

"I'm not disappointed, I'm happy to do whatever role is asked of me," he said.

"If that's closer to the ruck, well I've played there a bit, so I don't mind at all."

Kiwi international Jason Nightingale was named at fullback in cover for Queensland Origin representative Boyd, with Shellharbour's Michael Lett and Dragons under 20s player Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa on the wings.

Jon Green and Ricky Thorby are listed as the starting props with Michael Weyman suspended for four weeks.

Penrith will be without NSW trio Luke Lewis, Michael Jennings and Blues debutant Michael Gordon.
