By the time St George Illawarra’s spluttering attack finally clicked into gear it was all too late.
The Dragons took 78 minutes to score, when captain Ben Hornby set up flying winger Brett Morris to score.
The late surge continued when Matt Cooper swept along the left touchline, but lost possession while trying to offload to Morris in a desperate bid for a match-winner.
Full coverage of the Dragons Instead, yesterday’s 10-6 defeat in front of 42,269 people at Suncorp Stadium has thrown the Dragons’ premiership credentials further into doubt.
Their lack of potency in attack was a major factor in the Dragons’ late season collapse last year, and there is a sense of deja vu about the 2010 campaign.
The competition leaders had a number of opportunities to score points in the second half, but struggled to find their way over the line.
Playmaker Jamie Soward was in superb touch as the architect of the Dragons’ attack, but time and again they stopped short of scoring through mistakes, forward passes and a desperate Broncos defence.
Instead Greater Western Sydney AFL’s marquee signing Israel Folau landed the knockout blows, scoring two tries.
Dragons second-rower Ben Creagh spoiled a perfect opportunity to cancel out the Broncos first-half score when he promoted the football to score when brought down just short of the line.
Referred to the video referee, Creagh’s momentum would almost certainly have carried him over, but was denied the four points after reaching out.
From there, St George Illawarra were put under pressure, with only a diving Jason Nightingale putting a stop to an audacious in-field kick by Broncos winger Antonio Winterstein, with two Brisbane attackers waiting eagerly to gather and score inside.
The next time the Dragons charged towards the Broncos line came about after fullback Josh Hoffman lost the ball on a kick-return in a tackle by Dragons captain Ben Hornby.
But their gift unravelled moments later, when Beau Scott forced a pass forward 20m out from the line.
Suddenly the game came to life, with Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer cutting through the Dragons’ defence only for the Broncos to knock on in a frantic last tackle scramble.
With 12 minutes remaining, St George Illawarra five-eighth Jamie Soward regathered his own midfield chip, but again there was to be no magic solution to their try-scoring woes.
In a willing and rugged contest, the scoreline stood stagnant during a 30-minute stand-off, before Folau brushed aside Hornby and then Cooper, Morris and Darius Boyd on an irresistable short-range run to the line.
Three minutes before half-time Hornby - who is yet to finalise a new contract at the club for next season - showed his Australian football potential with a spectacular marking grab in front of Folau to defuse a Lockyer bomb.
It was part of a dominant first half for the Broncos, who took a 4-0 lead into the break.
Broncos halfback Peter Wallace is on report for a 14th minute high shot on NSW State of Origin centre Beau Scott, who started the game at lock.
However, Scott will also come under scrutiny by the NRL match review panel for lashing out with his elbow in retaliation to the Wallace hit.
