Wayne Bennett apologises for Darius Boyd interview

19 Aug, 2009 05:05 PM
St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett has taken the unusual step of apologising to journalists following Darius Boyd's performance at a press conference yesterday.

The 22-year-old fullback delivered one-sentence responses to eight questions posed to him at a training session in Wollongong before reporters gave up and complained to Bennett.

Bennett, who is himself renowned from shying away from the media, reportedly spoke to Boyd about his disrespectful interview and then offered to apologise to the gathered press.

Last week Dragons prop Justin Poore was criticised for offering a short statement after a successful NRL judiciary hearing that cleared him to play on the weekend.

It is believed Bennett apologised to some reporters for that incident, taking responsibility for their behaviour as he had asked the players not to say too much.

Unfortunately, he later explained, the players thought he meant say nothing at all.

Darius Boyd obviously thinks he's clever, but he just comes across as a spoilt brat. The excuse given by the coach might have been plausible if his team were full of primary school students, not grown men supposedly with brains of their own. Wayne Bennett himself has a reputation for this sort of rubbish. The irony is that without the media, he wouldn't be as well regarded by the public as a coach and nor would his other commercial ventures, like his books, have done so well. The Dragons are already yet again showing great arrogance leading into the finals. The problem is, unless you win the comp, you just end up looking like a bunch of underachieving prats at the end.

If the player did something wrong why isn't he saying sorry to the press instead of the coach doing it. This is part of the problem with the poor regard in which the game is held. Spoilt sheltered boys not having to face up to what they do and say.

Hey Baz read again. The report says it is believed that Bennet apologised to reporters. What more do you want? Is a quote necessary, or are you accusing the mercury of fabrication???

I think his interview is hysterically funny. He clearly is in competition with his mates to make the worst interview possible.

Shame on Boyd, acting arrogant and disrespectful. Does he not realise that without the media exposure, there would be little interest, little support, and no money to pay his wages? Grow up Boyd, and try selling and representing the game that has given you a job and a lifestyle others dream of. I think people are getting sick of supporting such self indulgent 'boys' who never grow up!

To be honest guys i know Darius personally and it's not what you think. He's pretty vague at the best of times, and while it looks like he's being a smart ass, he's a actually just being himself.

I know him personally to he is very shy thats just his personality he isnt arrogant and disrespectful he just a quiet person. his job is to play footy not talk to the media so i think everyone should get over it. I don;t think people have the right to call him a spoilt brat , a brainless meethead ect you dont know anything about him so keep you immature comments to yourself.
