St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett has thrown a lifeline to halfback Mathew Head by naming him on the bench for Sunday's blockbuster with the Sharks at WIN Jubilee Oval.
Head played in all three Dragons trial games but was dropped in preference for captain Ben Hornby in the opening two NRL rounds.
But, after impressive performances for feeder club Shellharbour City, Head has been brought in as a replacement alongside prop Dan Hunt, second-rower Neville Costigan and hooker Luke Priddis.
While Bennett is playing his cards close to his chest, Head's inclusion raises the prospect of him playing at halfback as part of a player shuffle which could see Hornby at fullback and Darius Boyd move to the centres.
With Head in, fullback Brett Morris has been dumped to play with Shellharbour.
It is the only change to the team that beat the Gold Coast 16-10 at WIN Stadium on Saturday.
The Dragons' defence has been rock solid in the opening two rounds and Priddis yesterday said he was determined to play a part in improving St George Illawarra's misfiring attack, with more running from dummy-half against the Sharks.
"The forwards are doing their job, it's just with the backs we're lacking a bit of cohesion there at the moment," he said.
"I'm a pretty strong runner (of the ball) when I get going and instead of waiting I've got to go out there and make it happen myself.
"I felt some improvement from last week though."
Sunday's battle against the Sharks also marks winger Wendell Sailor's 200th NRL game since his debut in 1993.
Meanwhile, Sharks winger Misi Taulapapa will make his plea to the NRL judiciary today after being reported for a head slam in Monday's 24-12 loss to Newcastle.
Centre Ben Pomeroy took an early guilty plea for a careless high tackle and is free to play on Sunday.
If Taulapapa is suspended, it will be another significant blow to the Sharks, who are already without prop Ben Ross (neck), fullback Brett Kearney (ankle) and halfback Brett Seymour (suspension).
