NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett has urged fans to pick defensive specialist Matt Cooper in his team for February's inaugural Indigenous versus NRL All Stars match on the Gold Coast.
The St George Illawarra coach leapt into cyberspace yesterday, blogging with fans on what he thinks the make-up of his team should be for the match at Skilled Park.
Fans will vote on who they think should be in the All Stars team after already selecting a star-studded Indigenous side late last year.
With the Indigenous side to feature Kangaroos centre pairing Justin Hodges and Greg Inglis, Bennett says he will need players capable of containing the pair's natural brilliance.
Top of his wish list was Dragons star Cooper (right), a veteran of 11 State of Origin matches and seven Tests, who would match-up with Hodges on the All Stars' left side.
When asked to single out one player he would select for this game, Bennett passed at first, and then wrote: "Actually, Matt Cooper.
"The centres will have to pick up Hodges and Inglis and he's one of the best defensive centres in the game."
Cooper is one of four Dragons players eligible.
Jeremy Smith, Ben Creagh and Darius Boyd are the others, with only one player allowed from each NRL team.
Four players are automatic selections: Darren Lockyer, Cameron Smith, Benji Marshall and Adam Blair - as captains and vice-captains of their respective countries.
Later in his blog, the master coach went on to give fans plenty of guidance as to who he thinks should be in his 20-man squad for the historic clash.
He gave utility players Kurt Gidley and Alan Tongue ringing endorsements and said hookers Robbie Farah or Mick Ennis were unlikely to be selected.
Bennett also expressed doubt about the defensive ability of young stars Israel Folau and Dave Taylor, both of whom he coached in Brisbane.
On Folau he wrote: "Later on he will handle centre, but wing is the position he plays most regularly.
"They've got Inglis and Hodges and we need to make sure we can defend against them."
Bennett contended that Taylor was more suited to defending in the centre of the park than on the edge.
