Wendell Sailor tipped to announce retirement

11 Nov, 2009 10:34 PM
Star St George Illawarra Dragons winger Wendell Sailor is expected to announce his retirement at St George Leagues club this morning.

Speculation has been rife on Sailor's plans for 2010 since the Dragons bowed out in the second week of this year's NRL finals series, after the joint-venture club captured their first minor premiership.

The 35-year-old dual international has just completed his second year with St George Illawarra after returning to rugby league following a successful stint in rugby union playing for the Queensland Reds, NSW Waratahs and Australian Wallabies - with his time in the 15-man code ended by a two-year ban for cocaine use.

The Dragons' crowd favourite had indicated he was keen to keep playing beyond this season, especially after re-uniting this year with new St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett - who gave Wendell his chance at the Brisbane Broncos and coached the Sarina junior to stardom.

Bennett, who previously admitted his concern about Sailor playing on too long, recently claimed it was up to the winger to make a decision on his future.

Throughout the year Sailor has declared his intention to play next year, but said he would consult Bennett and club chief executive Peter Doust.

In an interview with the Mercury earlier this year, Sailor admitted a three-day pre-season boot camp in Nowra was the "toughest thing" he had done in his career.

Sailor, who lives in Wollongong with wife Tara and children Matissa, 6, and Tristan, 11, is one of the Dragons' most popular players on and off the field.

In one of his most memorable off-field endeavours, Sailor last year bolted across four lanes of busy traffic on the F6 to pull a baby from a car that had collided with a semitrailer.

The Dragons today will also announce the schedule of matches for the 2010 NRL season, including games to be played at WIN Stadium.

    Full coverage after 10.30am today.
