Weyman may return early

18 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
Dragons prop Michael Weyman has cast aside the disappointment of missing out on NSW's State of Origin victory in Brisbane, focusing instead on an early return from injury.

While his best mate Justin Poore and second-rower Ben Creagh celebrated a breakthrough win for the Blues on Wednesday, Weyman had his feet up - and right ankle strapped.

After injuring the ankle in game two of the series in Sydney, Weyman has spent much of the week in his home town of Moruya with parents Ack and Narelle, instead of in Queensland with the rest of the NSW squad.

But with the Dragons leading the race to the NRL minor premiership, Weyman refused to dwell on the fact he had missed out.

"I would have loved to play, but that's footy, there's nothing you can do about it," Weyman said.

"I've just got to move on now.

"They showed a lot of pride there (in Brisbane) and they really had a dig."

While most of the Dragons squad spent the week away from Wollongong recharging before the frantic race to the finals, Weyman returned to WIN Stadium early to continue his rehabilitation program.

St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett hinted after Sunday's victory over Manly that the bustling prop may be back in action sooner than expected.

Weyman, who aggravated his ankle injury against the Tigers two days after playing for NSW in Origin II, was not expected back until round 23, when the Dragons take on his old club Canberra.

However, it is believed he may even be a chance of making the trip to New Zealand to play the Warriors on Sunday week.

Weyman said he was looking forward to taking on his former Raiders team-mates, but hoped to be back on the field before the August 15 clash at Canberra Stadium.

"We've got to wait and see how it pulls up from a few runs," he said.

"The rehab is going pretty good, so we'll wait and see how it pulls up in the next couple of days and then again early next week.

"I just want to get back on the field as quickly as I can, regardless who we're playing.

"It will be good to play the old club, but I just want to get back on the field."
