Who will prop up the Dragons now?

04 Aug, 2008 05:00 AM
St George Illawarra suffered major casualties from Saturday night's loss to the Sharks at Toyota Stadium.

Dragons prop Justin Poore was the most serious, after dislocating his knee cap early in the second half.

While club medical staff are hopeful Poore will play a role in the Dragons' finals campaign - if they qualify - it is feared the workhorse front-rower's season may be over.

The injury came just a day after Poore was included in the Australian squad for the upcoming World Cup.

A devastated Poore sat with ice packed on his knee after the game, having been taken from the field on a medicab.

Adding to the Dragons' woes, fullback Brett Morris also left the ground after suffering an injury to the AC joint in his left shoulder.

With Poore and second-rower Ben Creagh sidelined for several weeks, Morris is in severe doubt for Friday night's crucial NRL showdown with Wests Tigers at WIN Stadium.

Captain Mark Gasnier and prop Jason Ryles are no guarantee to play either.

Both are struggling with thigh injuries and if Ryles fails to prove his fitness the Dragons will have just one specialist prop who has played first grade this year in Dan Hunt.

It may force coach Nathan Brown to rush Ricky Thorby, a surprise inclusion on the bench on Saturday night, or Jon Green, who has been playing with Jim Beam Cup feeder club the Shellharbour Marlins.

On a heartbreaking night for the Dragons, Sharks veteran halfback Brett Kimmorley added insult to injury, slotting home a 78th minute field goal to snatch victory.

Kimmorley regathered his own deflected grubber kick and scored in the 75th minute, with Luke Covell's conversion levelling the scores.

After missing his first field goal attempt from 40m a minute earlier, Kimmorley then made no mistake from 30m out, sealing a brilliant Sharks comeback.

The Dragons had the chance to win the game in the final seconds with an overlap, but Sharks fullback Brett Kearney defused the situation by knocking a grubber kick by second-rower Matt Prior dead in-goal.

In the tense final moments, Prior kicked in behind Covell, despite the Dragons having men unmarked on his outside.

The game also saw a major momentum shift after five-eighth Jamie Soward kicked out on the full.

That led to Covell's 61st minute try, which put the Sharks back in the contest at 12-4.

In a thrilling battle of finals intensity, Soward admitted the Dragons were made to pay for crucial errors.

"I take a bit of responsibility on myself," Soward said.

"We had our chances. It's pretty shattering. We just came up with errors at crucial times and the Sharks came up with the big plays.

"It's pretty frustrating, hard to take.

"But we've just got to learn from our mistakes and get ourselves up for next week."
