Woonona teenager Tyson Frizell will take a major step towards achieving his dream of playing for the Wallabies next month when he joins the Australian schoolboys rugby team on a tour of Europe.
The Shamrocks junior will attend camp with the squad on November 18, 12 days after completing his HSC exams at Illawarra Sports High.
However, the magical achievement almost never became a reality for Frizell.
At the end of Year 11, Frizell considered leaving school to take up an electrician apprenticeship, a move that would have ended any hope he had of being part of the tour.
A decision to balance textbooks with try-scoring has paid off. Frizell played for the national schoolboys team in representative games against Tonga and New Zealand, where he earned a spot for the European trip.
"It was a toss-up whether to leave school or not," he said.
"In the end my parents and I decided that, being my last year, I should see it through.
"I'm pretty stoked it's worked out this way."
Frizell represented Illawarra, NSW Country and NSW under 17s last year, before leaving the Shamrocks to play with Sydney's Southern Districts in the Colts competition.
An inside centre, Frizell helped Southern Districts to a breakthrough grand final appearance this season - a year in which he was also chosen for NSW Combined High Schools and NSW Schoolboys teams.
He was then called up to an Australian Schoolboys line-up that demolished Tonga 83-18, before losing to New Zealand 28-24 in Queensland.
During the whirlwind ride, Frizell has also had to focus on his studies. After completing his HSC exams on November 6, he is free to embark on the seven-game tour of England, Ireland and Wales. At the same time, his mates will be on their schoolies adventure on the Gold Coast.
"But I'd rather be on this trip anyway. I can't wait to get over there," he said.
