Wolves let star striker Prenzoski run free

20/11/2008 4:00:00 AM
Ilija Prenzoski - the spearhead of Wollongong FC's charge to NSW Premier League grand final victory - is unlikely to play for the Wolves next year.

Prenzoski (pictured above), who won the club's golden boot award after netting seven goals in 14 starts plus three goals during the finals, hasn't started talking to the Wolves about 2009.

The Wolves revealed last week that they were $240,000 in debt, casting doubts about the club's future.

Prenzoski confirmed he was negotiating with a rival NSW Premier League club and an Illawarra Premier League club.

Prenzoski, who married wife Anastasia three weeks after the Wolves' stirring grand final triumph, said he would make a decision about where to play in 2009 in the next fortnight.

"I will know what I'm doing in the next couple of weeks," Prenzoski said.

What would it take for the ex-Dandaloo striker to play for a Wollongong-based state league side in 2009?

"It would have to be a pretty good offer," Prenzoski said.

"Right now there is zero percent chance, because no one from the club has contacted me.

"I haven't spoken to anyone - I don't know what's going on, I have heard the club is trying to promote juniors.

"I spoke to (2008 coach) John Turner a couple of weeks ago and he was supposed to call me back and I haven't heard anything," Prenzoski said.

Although 2008 had a storybook ending, Prenzoski said last year's stint with Wollongong FC was frustrating.

"A lot of things went wrong for me during the season, there were distractions like the training ground and having to chase up our pay from time to time," he said.

"There's a lot of things that could be improved."

Prenzoski confirmed he wasn't owed any money by the club.

"I've been enjoying my time off - this has been the longest I've had off for a long while."

Did you ever think that maybe they didn't want him back?

It's easy to keep kicking the Wolves in the guts while they are flat out on the mat.

I wonder if this kind of barrage on a club that has brought 2 national titles (and i think a state one just recently too didn't they?) to the area is good grounding for an A-League team here?

I think it's amazing the team played as well as they did under the difficult conditions.

It shows how skillful and talented players like Ilija Prenzoski really are.

Any team would be crazy to let players like him go.

These are the kind of players a team should be investing in, it obviously worked in favour for the Wolves this year, but looks like someone else will be the lucky one next year.
