Mt Pleasant swimmer Robert Hurley has continued his good form over the weekend at the Santa Clara International meet in California.
Hurley got through to the 200m freestyle final as ninth fastest qualifier and finished in that position on Saturday.
He redeemed himself the next day when he led off the Aussie B team's 4x200m relay and produced a great swim to touch out the Aussie A team's lead swimmer Kenrick Monk in 1:48.36, a time which would have seen Hurley finish fourth in the previous day's 200m final.
On Sunday Hurley produced a terrific swim in the 400m freestyle final in a field that included the incomparable Michael Phelps.
Hurley finished a close third behind Phelps and Canadian champion Ryan Cochrane in front of a packed venue.
Phelps established a large lead in the first 200m and was 4.4 seconds ahead of Hurley, who was in fifth position at the halfway mark.
Hurley and Cochrane mowed Phelps down over the final 100m with Phelps holding on to win in 3:48.05 to Cochrane's 3:48.40 and Hurley a fraction behind in 3:48.49.
Hurley's last three 50m splits were huge as he cut down the leaders.
Cochrane and Phelps were in adjacent lanes six and seven with Hurley out in lane two.
Yesterday (Monday AEST), Hurley was runner-up to Cochrane in the 1500m final.
Cochrane, the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist for this event, won in 15:06.70 to Hurley's 15:07.08, with Australian champion Ryan Napoleon third in 15:16.66.
Hurley was 4.5 seconds behind Cochrane at the 800m mark, then 2.5 behind with 200m to go, storming back in the last 200m, including a final 100m in an outstanding 56.59, to just miss out on a win in the outdoor pool under quite windy conditions.
Hurley's time, at just his third attempt at 1500m, was eighth fastest Australian all-time and a massive 11.5 better than his previous best.
