McDonald's Twitter campaign backfires

25 Jan, 2012 12:36 PM

Lovin' It they were not.

A social media campaign to share stories about McDonald's failed spectacularly yesterday when Twitter users hijacked the hashtag #McDstories to talk about eggshells in their McMuffins and fingernails in their burgers.

Twitter users across the world recalled horror stories like rats in the kitchen, bones in chicken nuggets and getting violently ill after eating at the restaurant chain.

Using the hashtag #meetthefarmers, McDonald's promoted their use of fresh produce by posting video interviews with farmers that supply their lettuce, beef, and potatoes.

Following that came the crucial tweet: "When u make something w/pride, people can taste it,' - McD potato supplier #McDStories."

It was then that the insults started rolling in.

James Winsoar, @winsoar, tweeted: "I once worked at McDonalds. I have never eaten there since. #McDStories".

Ben Wright shared a picture of a hash brown in Peterborough in the UK that allegedly came with a squashed insect, @Esamsultan remembered his friend almost choking on a chicken bone in a McNugget and a long list of users recalled examples of food poisoning too graphic to publish.

However, the McDonald's social media director Rick Wion said reports of the campaign failing were exaggerated.

"Lots of overreaction on #MCDstories. Here are the numbers: That day there 72,000+ mentions of McD's. Only 2% were negative," he tweeted.
