'Ned Kelly's skull' handed to authorities

13 Nov, 2009 10:57 AM
A skull purported to be that of Ned Kelly has been handed to medical authorities, more than 30 years after the bushranger's skull was stolen from the Old Melbourne Jail.

However it is expected to take more than a year to determine if the remains are in fact those of the infamous outlaw.

Tom Baxter, a farmer from Derby in remote Western Australia, handed the skull to the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine this week.

He has had the skull for years, but has not revealed how it came to be in his possession.

The skull was stolen from a glass cabinet in the Old Melbourne Gaol in 1978, and its whereabouts has remained a mystery since then.

Mr Baxter told ABC Radio his decision came after the discovery in Melbourne last year of a grave believed to contain Ned Kelly's headless skeleton.

"It seemed like an appropriate time that the skull be reunited with the bones in an effort to properly bury him,'' he said.

lets hope that this indeed is Neds (Uncle Edward to my family) Kellys skull. My kids went to school on Wed. 11/11 and told the teachers that at 10.00 am it was Uncle Edwards anniversary of his death (hanging), but the teachers just weren't interested in our history. RIP Ned(Uncle Edward). He should have been buried with the Eureka Stockade flag wrapped around him. A 'true legend'.

Well, if it can be identified as Ned's skull, they might also confirm or deny a medical myth that the Sella turcica (or Turk's saddle) a saddle-shaped depression on upper surface of sphenoid body, containing pituitary gland , is considerably more pronounced in criminals.

i think it will be great if it is Neds skull, it will be the completion of a true legend, and it will put to rest the stories that counteract that

Hi Count et al., Ned Kelly was a criminal remember. He stole from people and killed people. What's so special and romantic about that?

There's thousands of crims. doing this sort of thing everyday around the world. I guess you would think they are "legends" too? Get real and grow up. I have criminals in my past too, but I'm not proud of that.

It’s just an unfortunate fact of life. I am proud of my ancestors who worked hard and saved, started business, employed people and raised happy and well-balanced kids who didn’t go around killing and stealing.

Hard working Mums and Dads, that’s who we should be proud of, and not just from the past. There’s tens of millions of legends right here now in Australia if you would only open your eyes.
