If you are heading into retirement the prognosis isn't good. It's great. Our older citizens are more cashed up than ever, having more fun and living longer.Once upon a time, reaching 100 was confined to Australian Test cricketers. How the tables have turned, with senior citizens the ones who are batting on - and on.Many of the policy makers see this growing grey population as a huge burden on society, particularly given the reduced workforce and the increased pressure on health services. But surely the fact we all stand to get more out of life is worth celebrating?Indeed, how liberating for this section of our community to be able to enjoy the fruits of its labour.Of course, those Australians dependent on pensions are far from living the high life.Perhaps they will finally receive the political and social attention they deserve instead of having to withstand the platitudes and stereotypes thrown at them up until now.And another thing...THE pleas of police, parents and the wider community might be sufficient in some cases to help curb the enthusiasm of young drivers who believe they are invincible. But if you look at the litany of lives lost on our roads (see Review) you might agree that a case for more drastic action is needed in the Illawarra and on the South Coast.Clearly the message is not getting through - and the State Government should ramp up its education program to the next level of "shock therapy" advertising.
