Last weekend's family fun day at Dapto pool was supposed to promote and encourage the people of the often maligned southern suburb.
By all accounts Celebrating Dapto was a roaring success, apart from the fact a child of 10 was deemed old enough to be handed a sample bag which contained a box of condoms.
As the parents of the young boy said, educating teenagers on sexual matters is one thing but this was pure stupidity.
We agree children should and must be educated about the facts of life and the dangers they will face as they head towards their adult life.
But it must come through their parents, educators or experts at an appropriate time, an appropriate age and in an appropriate environment, not at a family fun day at the swimming pool.
The people responsible have pledged to reconsider their strategy at public events. But it was a foolish act and those responsible should be counselled.
