EDITORIAL: Public has power to save smaller shops

17 Aug, 2009 03:05 PM
Proposals by two supermarket giants to set up shop in the neighbouring suburbs of Woonona and Bulli have divided business owners.

While some are confident loyal customers will stand by them and that the supermarkets might bring more people into town, others fear Woolworths and Aldi will drive out the little guys.

Cash-strapped consumers looking for convenience, savings and variety are likely to welcome the proposals.

Consumers deserve a choice on where to shop for groceries close to home, particularly given the recent growth in the northern suburbs.

If consumers want to see their main streets and humble family businesses survive the added competition, they will need to vote with their wallets and support the small businesses.

As consumer organisation Choice points out, shoppers need to use them or lose them.

Neither the Woolworths or Aldi plans have been approved by Wollongong City Council yet, so there is still time to be heard.

And another thing ...

Another busy weekend on Illawarra roads has been marred by a serious motorcycle accident. Police have renewed their plea for riders to take care, particularly on the dangerous downhill stretch near Bald Hill. Hopefully riders will heed the warning.

Everywhere a large supermarket chain store opens, the small businesses close down. It will happen in Bulli and Woonona as well. Tell the Council to keep them out of our suburbs.

Shopping is not just about prices. It is also about convenience and easy access; quality, selection and other factors do come into it. But many people are pushed for time, so rather than go from one shop to another, it is quicker to do it all in once place. Then there are those of older years who need easy access. I like the Aldi shops, W/worths Unanderra and Berkeley Bi Lo because I can walk easily into the shops. without having to navigate steps or elevators. Price is important, of course, but not THE most important factor in shopping.

It is global phenomenon and loyal customers or not, eventually big shops win, this is inevitable. And lets face it, convenience of large one stop shop with easy parking and access is even logical. Biggest problem is employment, maybe small shop owners should be supported with availablity of positions for them in new outlets, but that is difficult issue too.

Woonona shopkeepers missed an opportunity several years ago when they objected to a proposal for a KMart. Woonona shopping centre has gone backwards since. Don't let is happend again. Welcome Aldi and Woolies.
