High hopes for region's jobs co-ordinator

24 Jun, 2009 04:34 PM
The appointment of Jane Robinson as the Illawarra's first employment co-ordinator is good news for the region's jobless.

It fulfils a commitment made by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd under the Federal Government's $650 million Local Jobs Fund.

Ms Robinson will be an important conduit between the 13,400 Illawarra people who can't find a job, employers, trainers and our federal and state parliaments.

The former Shellharbour City Council economic development manager has impressive local government credentials but, make no mistake, her task will be daunting in a region where the employment rate is rapidly closing on 10 per cent.

Ms Robinson will need all the help and co-operation she can get from business leaders, trainers and our parliamentary representatives.

Nobody expects miracles, but if she can raise our case for special consideration at the highest levels she will have done her job.

And another thing ...

Federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull's handling of the so-called "ute-gate" scandal has been clumsy to say the least.

Mr Turnbull's attempt to link Mr Rudd to the scandal has fallen flat and threatens his future as Coalition leader. Ute-gate still has a long way to go, but in their first head-to-head clash the PM is way ahead on points.

I wish Ms Robinson every success in her more than difficult job. A journey starts with a single step. Find one person a job, and break the drought. There is nothing succeeds like success.

For many years now the Illawarra has had a high level of unemployment. We have State Labor MPs that give the spin after spin year in and year out.

Why not make job with the upgrade of the Picton Road? (Sorry no funding for upgrade this year. ) even after the amount of deaths on this road) again this up grade would have made jobs for local people. Fast train System to Sydney?( Sorry cost to much to build.) again this would make jobs and people would get to and from work on time. Complete the half finished Railway line from Picton to Wollongong study carried out.( Sorry no funds for that) again this would make local jobs and is needed with the Port Kembla extension. We are just being taken for granted by all our State Labor MP. What we need is swing seats not people who just tow the party line. Now we have coal trucks going 24/7 on Roads that need up grades more accidents waiting to happen. Several months ago David Campbell MP made a statment that was reported in the Mercury Roads can take these coal trucks. Most Illawarra Roads are in urgent need of attention. and upgrades.

What Ute-Gate got to unemployment in Illawarra? Maybe just opportunity for points scoring.

Why employ someone to do the job that our MP's are supposed to do what a waste of money when there is no money around

Let's see more job and less rhetoric. Wouldn't that be a welcome change.
