Plans in place to remember women's loss

27 Oct, 2009 02:37 PM
Women throughout NSW will be thanking South Coast MP Shelley Hancock for recognising the heartache of losing a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or in early infancy.

Mrs Hancock has successfully lobbied the NSW Parliament to consider an annual Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. One in every four pregnancies in NSW will end in miscarriage, yet women and their partners often suffer in silence. Many are afraid of society's reaction and fear they will be judged for "causing" their baby's death.

The feeling of guilt, often coupled with a thoughtless comment that "things will work out for the best", is too often overwhelming. Even when the initial pain has dulled a little, the heartache never goes away.

An official day of remembrance would let women know they have every right to mourn their lost child and not have to suffer that pain in silence.

And another thing ...

A federal parliamentary committee chaired by Throsby MP Jennie George has revealed how under-prepared coastal Australia is to cope with the effects of climate change.

Those of us who live on the coast are on the frontline of climate change. We need to be assured that authorities unite to seriously address vital issues and are prepared for the future.
