Stop playing politics with pokie addicts

Stop playing politics with pokie addicts

19 Jan, 2012 07:50 AM
There is no doubt problem gambling has destroyed families and in many cases, destroyed lives.

It is an insidious addiction which although not posing the same health risks as smoking and alcohol, still has the power to harm both addicts and their families.

The Productivity Commission found that in 2010, 40per cent of gaming machine losses - $5billion out of $12billion - were incurred by problem gamblers.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and independent MP Andrew Wilkie continue to carry on with their absurd dance around the issue of a mandatory pre-commitment scheme for poker machines.

Mr Wilkie wants new laws limiting the amount a player can spend on poker machines introduced in the first half of this year and has threatened to withdraw his support for Ms Gillard if this is not achieved.

Ms Gillard had pledged to support Mr Wilkie’s mandatory reforms in return for his support of her minority government following the last election.

However, now she has a spare number up her sleeve, it appears she is backing away from that agreement. It’s time to put politics aside and instead work together with the community to formulate a workable plan to tackle this growing problem.

Ms Gillard, Mr Wilkie, Mr Abbott and the gambling industry must all be very aware that increasingly the option of BANNING pokies is being raised in the public arena? The notion is now raised almost daily in news reader comments. A year ago it was not even thought of!

There will be a majority public backlash if the carnage of pokies is not stopped, or at least very much slowed. Alhough Australian citizens effectively endorsed "pokies gambler licensing" since it laughed at the fear-mongering attempts of Clubs in its "Licence to Punt" campaign...BANNING is looking GREAT right now!

I have lost a lot of money in the poker machines before, $11000 in one year, i'm not proud, but i realized i had a problem and solved it.

Surely we can help the person through it with education and support. and no bloody useless 12 step BS.

Families of problem gamblers should be able to register their family for help, i would institute a plan to provide advice, support, and community aid for those in need i would also ask that the problem gambler is made to undergo money measures seen in the NT intervention.

And also to set themselves achievable goals they can work towards long term.
