THE Salvation Army has been a vital part of the Australian community for 125 years, yet it seems that the demand for its services has never been greater. This year alone, the organisation is seeking to raise a massive $75 million through its Red Shield Appeal, including more than $9 million from this weekend's doorknock appeal.During the past 12 months, about 80,000 people have sought the organisation's welfare services for the first time. Each year the Salvos help more than one million people who, for one reason or another, desperately need a hand up.It's worth remembering that people turn to the Salvos for more than just financial help. There are people such as Manii Verzosa (see his story in the Weekender magazine) who found solace and support with the Salvos after the devastating deaths of his wife and newborn baby. And there are victims of abuse, those who are addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling and even those trying to trace missing family members who turn to the Salvos for help.So when the Salvos come knocking on your door this weekend, dig deep and help this worthy institution continue its work in helping others less fortunate.
