It will sit as one of the ironies of the Great Recession - in these dark economic times we witnessed the biggest ever splurge on schools in Australia.
Yesterday federal Labor MPs Sharon Bird and Jennie George beamed as they announced the first stage of funding to our schools.
In all, 35 primary schools will receive $70 million. In total, primary schools across the nation will receive $12 billion in funding.
Sadly, much of the infrastructure of the region is in a state of disrepair and the NSW Government and councils have not been able to keep up with the maintenance schedule.
Notably, this is seen in our schools, many which have facilities that do not reflect the times.
While we have first-class teachers, our school buildings are generally second-rate. Some schools - like Berkeley - simply don't have a hall where students can gather. Other schools lack a library or adequate classrooms.
Cynics will question whether the works will really benefit the local economy. We suspect they will, but regardless they will lift spirits and create a better learning environment for students and teachers alike.
Our state's schools are great schools. Who could knock them receiving the TLC they deserve?
Communities will look back and say, for once, that was taxpayers' money well spent.
