Ugly crime committed by cowards

The increased incidents of glassings in our pubs and clubs are a disturbing sign of the times, as alcohol-related violence escalates inside and outside our licensed venues.Glassings are particularly cowardly attacks, inflicted in a split second but with the potential to cause a lifetime of facial - and emotional - scarring.A drastic measure to wipe out such attacks would be to ban glassware in pubs and clubs altogether. Such a move, however, would be an embarrassing admission of how low we have sunk as a society. Are we such a brutal bunch that we can't be trusted with a schooner glass?By and large we are not, but there is a ratbag element that pickle their brains and then pick up the nearest weapon as soon as an argument doesn't go their way.The fact is, we are a hard-drinking society. Many of our young people especially drink to get drunk. It is inevitable that fights will break out in pubs and clubs - they always have - but smashing a broken glass in someone's face is a gutless act.The solution is to crack down hard on these idiots.Tougher penalties and rigorous prosecution of those accused of such cowardly attacks will send a message that it simply won't be tolerated.
