Mother accused of eating baby son's brain had schizophrenia

29 Jul, 2009 12:15 PM
A mother accused of murdering her three-week-old baby son and eating his brain was diagnosed with schizophrenia and postpartum psychosis, her family has said.

Otty Sanchez was admitted to hospital with self-inflicted stab wounds following the discovery of the baby's body in a bedroom of their home in Texas.

The 33-year-old allegedly told police that the devil made her kill her child.

Police said the woman had used a knife and two swords to dismember the baby, then eaten the child's brain and other body parts.

Authorities found the baby with three of his toes chewed off, his face torn away and his head severed.

Sanchez was released from hospital on Tuesday and has been moved to Bexar County Jail where she is being held on $1 million bond on a capital murder charge, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Relatives said Sanchez said her mental health had deteriorated in the week before her son's death, and she had reportedly asked to see a counsellor.

The father of the baby told the San Antonio Express-News that his former partner should be executed for the alleged crime.

"She was a sweet person and I still love her, but she needs to pay the ultimate price for what she has done," Scott W. Buchholz said.

There is the possibility that this woman was given an antidepressant [also an antipsychotic] for her postpartum depression. The new atypical antipsychoticsc are half antidepressant. The Physicians Desk Reference states that SSRIs and all antidepressants can cause mania, psychosis, abnormal thinking, paranoia, hostility, etc. These symptoms can also suddenly appear during withdrawal from the antidepressants.

I do believe that the Devil told her to kill her baby. After all there is a lot of people out there that here voices and they are to embarrassed to get the help they need. They need to know there is nothing to be ashamed of if you have a mental problem. But that does not excuse her for killing her baby, is what she should have done was called 000 or family members to help her, after all there is a lot of help out there if you want it.
