Skydiver James Boole survives 1.8km drop without parachute

19 May, 2009 03:45 PM
A British skydiver has spoken of his miracle escape after he fell 1.8km onto a mountain without fully opening his parachute.

James Boole had been filming another skydiver for a television documentary when he hit snow-covered rocks at 160km/h in Russia.

The 31-year-old was meant to open his parachute when his partner signalled that he was close to the ground.

But the signal came too late and Mr Boole had just seconds to open his parachute before hitting the snow.

The whole incident was captured on camera.

Mr Boole suffered a broken back and rib, a bruised lung and chipped teeth in the accident. He was rescued and taken to a hospital in Moscow, before he was flown back home, where he is now recovering.

He only survived because he landed on a deep snow drift.

Mr Boole told the Sun newspaper that he felt like he had been "hit by a speeding truck" and thought he was going to die.

"People say it all the time, but I feel like the luckiest man in the world," he said.
