Susan Boyle video among most popular in internet history

06 May, 2009 04:41 PM
An online clip of singing sensation Susan Boyle has become one of the most watched viral videos of all time, a new study of internet trends has shown.

The unassuming Scot has earned fifth spot on a list compiled by Visible Measures, an independent company that measures the consumption and distribution of internet video.

  • WATCH: the top five viral videos of all time

The company claims the list, called The 100 Million Views Club, is the first of its kind to document the most watched viral videos of all time.

Only 18 clips in history have attracted 100 million views and, just a month after Boyle burst onto the scene, she is already at number five.

Taking top spot is Crank That, a video clip by US rapper Soulja Boy, which has attracted 356 million hits.

Next is a trailer for the vampire film Twilight, followed by video clips by Mariah Carey and stand-up comedian Jeff Dunham.

But racing up the list is a clip of Susan Boyle, who stunned the judges on the television talent show Britain's Got Talent with her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream last month.

Visible Measures says that it had been inundated with requests for a list of the most watched videos since Susan Boyle became an online star last month.

"The questions come in part because people are eager to understand Susan's position in the pantheon of viral video history, but also because the numbers involved have exceeded many people's expectations regarding the potential cultural impact of online video," the company says on its website.

  • "Over the past few days, our platform has been busily compiling and categorising the data relating to the web's largest video campaigns."

The list is a collection of old and new campaigns, and includes music videos, movie trailers, and clips from television shows.

"The most impressive aspect of (Susan Boyle's) viral video success is the fact that she burst onto the scene just three weeks ago," the company says, while predicting she will crack the number three spot soon.

The list was compiled by analysing data from more than 150 video-sharing sites.
