Councillor Peter Moran hurt in industrial accident

Shellharbour independent councillor Peter Moran will undergo surgery today after he was hit by steel pipes at Tahmoor Colliery yesterday.

Paramedics were called to the colliery about 2.10pm and found Mr Moran, 52, suffering a number of broken bones, including all ten toes, a broken wrist and a fractured second vertebrae.

It is believed he was unloading steel and other materials from a truck when the load fell on him.

He was stabilised at the scene before being taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

He will undergo surgery today.

A spokeswoman for Xstrata Coal, which owns the colliery, confirmed a sub-contractor had been hurt yesterday.‘‘The incident is being investigated by site personnel,’’ she said.
