The 12-year-old was walking along Carringle Street about 8.15am yesterday when a man walked up from behind her and grabbed her wrist.
She told the man to let go a number of times before he finally released her and walked away in the opposite direction.
The girl walked to school and told teaching staff, who contacted police.
Officers patrolled the area and canvassed nearby homes.
At the time of the incident the man was wearing black, baggy tracksuit pants and a grey hooded jumper that was pulled over his head.
He also smelt of cigarettes.
