Camp Quality Convoy smashes records

They rumbled through the Illawarra streets, engines grunting, horns blaring, to cheers of thousands of bystanders.

A record-breaking number of trucks and motorcycles passed through town yesterday, marking the biggest year in the I98 FM Camp Quality Convoy's eight-year history.

A total of 748 trucks and 893 motorcycles took part in the event, which is expected to raise a whopping $900,000 for Camp Quality Illawarra.

I98 FM events co-ordinator Danielle Quintero said organisers were "blown away" by the response to the event, which saw the truck auction and merchandise sales surpass fund-raising expectations.

"We annihilated last year's [total] already - in the one-hour lead truck auction we raised $693,275.20, which was more than last year's auction and fun day combined," Ms Quintero said.

"That's not including one cent from merchandise sales, trade stalls, raffle tickets or gold coin donations - so that's very exciting for us."

More than 9000 people converged on the convoy's destination point - at Albion Park's Croome Road Sporting Complex - for a family fun day, featuring stalls, activities and special performances by The Voice's Delta Goodrem, Rachael Leahcar and Ben Hazlewood.

Vendors reportedly sold out of more than 15,000 convoy T-shirts and flags.

The convoy, which departed from Illawarra Coal's Westcliff Colliery on Appin Road from 8.15am yesterday morning, was disrupted by two minor accidents in the Cataract area, less than half an hour later.

Paramedics were called around 8.40am to treat a male, aged in his 50s, who had come off his motorbike and sustained shoulder and facial injuries.

The man - along with his female passenger, who also suffered minor injuries - was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.

Just a few minutes later, a 52-year-old motorcyclist suffered a possible fractured collarbone and facial abrasions after his bike hit a concrete wall along the F6 Freeway.

He was also taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.
