Lake Illawarra police Inspector Steve Worthington said the man was seen sitting with his legs dangling over the Coledale Railway Station platform about 1.30am yesterday, moments before he was hit by an approaching train.
The train driver had attempted to alert the man by sounding the horn.
The man was dragged about 20 metres and sustained severe head and chest injuries.
Police were first on the scene and gave first aid until ambulance paramedics arrived. The man was airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.
