Motorists can park for free in the CBD today, due to a fault with the city's parking meters.
But they can still be booked if they park too long.
A Wollongong City Council spokesman said that an error in an off-site computer operated by the parking meter provider has affected all CBD parking meters.
The fault means the meters record the wrong time and not provide a ticket.
Today, the spokesman said no-one will be fined for failing to display a parking ticket.
He added that the drivers should restrict their parking to the current limits set on the parking signs.
Council’s rangers will be issuing fines for people who overstay the parking restrictions.
