The leak, which does not pose a threat, is believed to have occurred in Rosebank Place, off Collins Street, after construction workers accidently hit a gas main.
Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the site and established a 200-metre exclusive zone around the leak until the situation can be rectified.
There have been reports that employees from offices and shops in nearby Terralong and Collins streets were evacuated while police said that residents were instructed to stay in their homes.
The leak has caused traffic problems in Kiama, which are expected to continue into the afternoon.
