The University of Wollongong has announced it is withdrawing its proposal for a creative arts precinct at Gleniffer Brae.
The announcement follows Monday night’s Wollongong City Council vote against its proposal for a creative arts precinct at Gleniffer Brae.
A rescission motion is planned to overturn the council’s rejection, but the university has indicated it is not willing to wait.
In a statement issued by the university just before 4pm, vice-principal of administration Chris Grange said the university had invested a significant amount of effort in developing a proposal which it considered would benefit the university, the Conservatorium of Music and creative arts community in Wollongong.
Mr Grange thanked those councillors who had expressed their support for the university’s proposal and expressed his regret that the majority of council members had not seen the benefits of the proposal.
The university has written to Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery telling him of the decision.
The announcement concluded with a statement that the university would not be making further comment on the issue.
