James Gallaugher ran the 4x100m in a zippy 11.72 seconds, overtaking a sprinter some 20 metres ahead on the home stretch to snatch victory for his relay team.
His race time would have won the 1896 Olympics and "is faster than any recorded in Australia or the United States" for his age, according to EuroSport.
Footage of the October relay race has been viewed more than 1.8 million times on YouTube and was recently picked up by international news sites, some of which have put the 12-year-old ‘‘prodigy’’ in the same company as a young Usain Bolt.
The South Coast champion has reportedly been approached by a handful of NRL clubs and an American sports school as a result of the media exposure.
