It took more than half a century for a father and son team to win the South Pacific pairs and now Australian bowls legend Steve Glasson and his highly-talented son Ben begin the defence of their crown this morning.
The Glassons became the first father-son team to win the pairs title in 53 years and will be among almost 200 teams taking part in the sectional round of the pairs.
Steve and Ben Glasson will play at headquarters Fairy Meadow and, in what is a growing trend for the carnival, are among a host of father-son teams who have entered the pairs.
Among the others taking part are Ashley and Tim Christie (Fairy Meadow), Eric and Kyle Johannes (Corrimal) and Bulli's Warren and Jared Hamilton.
Fourteen Illawarra clubs will host play in 48 sections today with the winners advancing to the 15-end knockout round on Wednesday.
